Your Own Backyard

A week ago, I posted this to my Linkedin Page. I thought it was a good post to turn into a blog. When feeling stuck for inspiration, don’t forget to look in your own backyard.

Living in the Baltimore [County] area, sometimes you get stuck where you are. In reality, Philadelphia is under two hours away, New York City is three hours give or take, The whole state of Delaware can be traveled to within three hours or so, West Virginia, and Virginia are ridiculously close as well! I say this because when you dabble in “scapes” photography, it is easy to stick to what you know, what you are comfortable with.

My “backyard”

The last couple years I missed the Christmas Tree at The United States Capitol. DC can feel like a long distance away sometimes, when in reality for someone like me, it is just about an hour to the dome. I made it a point to get there this year. There wasn’t time to Shoot the Christmas Tree made of crab baskets in both Grasonville, MD or Cambridge, MD this year. I didn’t get up to see the Rockefeller Tree in New York and likely won’t make it to Hoopers Island to see theirs made of crab traps. Lastly, I did not make it up to Havre de Grace, MD to see their traditional tree standing proud with the Concord Point Lighthouse. Again, maybe I will see a few of them, maybe I won’t.

For various reasons, the Christmas spirit which I typically exude wasn’t present this year. It was a hard holiday for me. It is my favorite, it generally makes me believe, not in Santa, but in humanity. That being said, I still made the most of it (That I could) and had a very nice holiday with family. I suggested to my wife, Britt, that we go see the tree in DC. We had a nice dinner in Fairfax, VA and headed over to Washington DC.

Capitol Dome

The Capitol Christmas Tree 2023 beautifully standing in front of the U.S. Capitol.

The Capitol Building, for all of the childishness that goes on inside that building, is still my favorite building in the country. It stands so proud and bold. At night, glowing like a beacon is my favorite time to view it. I could stand or sit and stare at it and reflect for long periods of time if I had it. It wasn’t particularly busy with foot traffic. Some gathered on the yard to take in the tree and Dome, others like us stayed across the street and or on the other side of the reflecting pool, just embracing the view. Please enjoy my photos from that visit, including a couple of Washington Monument shots, can’t leave President Washington out. More of my work can be found on my
